3. Will I have more autonomy—or just a different version of the same rules?

Let me give it to you straight: not all “independence” is created equal.

Some advisors leave wirehouses hoping for freedom… only to land at another firm that’s just as controlling, just smaller and with a different logo.

What you really want is freedom with support. That’s the sweet spot.

Ask:

Do I control my brand, or am I just customizing a template?

Do I choose my tech stack or inherit a clunky system?

Am I free to run my practice my way… or will I face more hidden red tape?

Stat: A 2023 J.D. Power survey showed that advisors who ranked highest in satisfaction were those who felt “empowered to make client decisions without corporate interference.”

Mentor tip: Don’t just ask “Will I be independent?” Ask what kind of independence—and whether it comes with strategic support or leaves you on an island.
